Poovar is a small coastal fishing village located near kovalam (just 12km from kovalam) the most famous beach in Thiruvananthapuram the capital city of kerala. Poovar is situated at the southern most tip of thiruvananthapuram and hence is very close to the Kerala – Tamilnadu border. Poovar lies close to vizhinjam the natural fishing harbour in kerala. Poovar is a rare mix of Land, Sea and River. Poovar separating the Neyyar river from the Arabian Sea. It has an estuary which connects with the sea during high tides. In earlier days Poovar was a trading center of timber, sandlewood, ivory and spices. It is believed that the trading ships of King Solomon landed in a port called 'Ophir', which is figured out as Poovar. Poovar has been one of the ancient Muslim settlements along the western coast of India.The Central Mosque here is believed to been built by Malik ibn Dinar and his missionary team, more than 1,400 years ago.

Poovar is a beautiful location golden sands and blue waters and all but the sea is rough there and so swimming is not advisable. The presence of fishermen population discorages sunbathing. There are no entertainment facilities and no water sports. So if these are the things that you have in mind you might as well go to kovalam that's near by or even varkala beach that's also not too far. Poovar beach's main attraction is its beauty and the feel that visitors experience of going back in time some 2 or 3 decades. See life moving in slow motion not bothered by or not aware of the blistering pace at which the rest of the world is moving. Backwaters of poovar is also worth seeing.
